Cappadocia and Nemrut Tour Overview
Commagene the forgotten Kingdom
The ruins of the tomb-sanctuary of king Antiochus Theos of Commagene are magnificent to behold even today. The site of his interment a top Mount Nemrut, a.k.a. Nemrut dagi, was named to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1987. Several sandstone bas reliefs discovered at the site contain the oldest known images of two figures shaking hands.
The mountain lies 40 km (25 mi) north of Kahta, near Adıyaman. In 62 BC, King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene built on the mountain top a tomb-sanctuary flanked by huge statues (8–9 m/26–30 ft high) of himself, two lions, two eagles and various Greek, Armenian and Persian gods, such as Hercules-Vahagn, Zeus-Aramazd or Oromasdes (associated with the Persian god Ahura Mazda), Tyche, and Apollo-Mithras.
The West terrace, the most sacred place on the mountain. From this terrace, you look out on the edge of the plain of Mesopotamia, the cradle of our civilization. The sun, the moon and all stars of the zodiac rise on your left, reaching their zenith directly in front of you, and descending to your right.
It is constructed of 92 stones each weighing about 10 tons. The three columns, two at one end and one at the other, are 9-10 metres in height.
The Holy Town Urfa
Urfa, also known as Sanli Urfa, isa city in eastern Turkey, and the provincial capital of Urfa Province. The city of Urfa is situated about eighty kilometers east of the Euphrates River. It is a very ancient city, for you can visit the cave where Abraham was born. Urfa is a great city where you can both walk in the dark streets of past and touch the bright future that you can see in the warm eyes of the innocent kids.
Harran is an archeological site in southeastern Turkey, 24 miles (39 kilometers) southeast of Urfa famous for its beehive shaped traditional houses.
Ancient Cappadocia, situated just an hour's drive away offers the opportunity for some of the most fascinating day walking to be enjoyed anywhere in the world. The famous troglodyte (underground) villages and the amazing scenery are best enjoyed on foot. The lunar landscape of Cappadocia is formed from tufa compacted volcanic ash which erodes easily and is very suitable for making caves. Since the earliest times men have burrowed into this rock, making underground houses, churches and even large cities. There are dramatic cave houses at Zelve and Uchisar, and a complete underground monastery at Goreme. The insides of the caves are decorated with religious frescoes in the Greek Orthodox style, almost a complete record of Christian art over almost 1,000 years. One of the oldest and largest settlements in Cappadocia is Derinkuyu, a complete underground city, with seven levels of tunnels said to extend for 14 kms.
Which we will explore on this trek is this huge area.
